The Story of Southwark Pensioners Centre
Our booklet ‘Then & Now – The Story of Southwark Pensioners Centre’ is available to view in full online.
Thank you!
Thank you to all our contributors on this project. And to all the volunteers, staff and members of the Southwark Pensioners Centre, then and now.
The “Then and Now” project is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund as part of a programme of activities and events to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Southwark Pensioners Centre.
The Then & Now project documents the origins and fascinating history of Southwark Pensioners Centre, from its origins in Walworth in the early 1970s.
Find out about early pensioner campaigns, a trip to Europe that inspired Southwark’s very own Pensioners’ Centre and the older people who led the way in this important chapter of Southwark’s heritage.
As part of the ‘Then & Now’ Project we have been interviewing staff and older people who have been a part of the Centre’s rich history.

“All the lobbying for funding at the town hall – all these people who worked tirelessly and attended meetings in the evening cold for their communities should be remembered, honoured, appreciated – it is the result of their hard work and commitment.”
Tenagne Geressu, former Community Development Worker
